What is Form 4868?
Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File The U.S. Individual Income Tax Return gives you an extra 6 months to file your federal tax return — moving the deadline from April 15 to October 15. It's important to understand that this extension is for filing only — it does not extend the time to pay. Any taxes owed are still due by the original April 15 deadline, and interest will accrue on unpaid amounts even if the extension is granted.
What is Form 4868 used for?
Form 4868 is used to:
- Request an automatic 6-month extension to file your Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, or 1040-SS.
- Avoid the late-filing penalty (5% per month, up to 25%) by notifying the IRS that you need more time.
- Make a payment toward your estimated tax liability — while not required, paying with the extension helps reduce interest and the late payment penalty.
How to fill out Form 4868
1. Complete Part I — Identification:
- Enter your name(s) as they will appear on your tax return.
- Enter your address (street, city, state, ZIP code).
- Line 2: Your Social Security number.
- Line 3: Your spouse's Social Security number (if filing jointly).
2. Complete Part II — Individual Income Tax:
- Line 4: Estimate your total tax liability for the year. Use your prior year's return and current income records to make this as accurate as possible — if the IRS determines your estimate wasn't reasonable, the extension can be voided.
- Line 5: Enter total payments already made (withholding, estimated tax payments). Do not include the amount you're paying with this form.
- Line 6: Subtract line 5 from line 4 to find your balance due.
- Line 7: Enter the amount you're paying with this extension. You're not required to pay, but paying as much as you can limits interest and penalties.
3. Check applicable boxes (if any):
- Line 8: Check this box if you are "out of the country" — meaning you live and work outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico. You automatically get 2 extra months to file (to June 15), and Form 4868 gives you an additional 4 months beyond that.
- Line 9: Check this box if you file Form 1040-NR and did not receive wages subject to U.S. income tax withholding.
4. Submit your extension:
- You don't need to file the paper form if you pay electronically and indicate it's for an extension — the IRS will auto-process it.
- To e-file, use IRS Free File, your tax software, or a tax professional.
- To mail, send the paper form to the IRS address for your state (addresses differ based on whether you're including a payment).
Who is required to fill out Form 4868?
Any individual taxpayer who needs more time to file their federal income tax return can file Form 4868, whether you're employed, self-employed, retired, or have any other source of income. You don't need to explain why you need the extension, and the IRS will only contact you if the request is denied.
Note: You don't need to file Form 4868 at all if you make an electronic tax payment and indicate it's for an extension. The IRS automatically processes the extension when you pay electronically through IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, or by credit/debit card.
When is Form 4868 not required?
Form 4868 is not needed if:
- You can file your tax return by the original April 15 deadline.
- You make an electronic payment and select "extension" as the payment type — the IRS processes the extension automatically without a separate form.
- You are a U.S. citizen or resident living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico — you automatically get a 2-month extension to June 15 without filing any form. However, interest still accrues on unpaid taxes from April 15, and you can file Form 4868 if you need an additional 4 months beyond June 15.
When is Form 4868 due?
Form 4868 must be filed by the original due date of your tax return — April 15, 2026, for most calendar year filers. If April 15 falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.
For taxpayers who are "out of the country," the form is due by June 15, 2026, if you need time beyond the automatic 2-month extension.
